Dangerous Wild Animals

If you are thinking of buying an exotic or unusual animal, including monkeys and some species of snake, insect or spider, then it is worthwhile checking that it is not covered by the Dangerous Wild Animals Act (DWAA). Anyone who wants to keep a classified dangerous wild animal at their home must hold a licence issued by the Council.

Licences are issued subject to specialised and strict conditions which aim to protect the welfare, safety and security of the animal, its owner and the public; they are reviewed annually and are subject to a satisfactory veterinary report.

The DWAA does not apply to any dangerous wild animal kept in a zoo, circus, pet shop; or registered scientific establishment.
